The fate of the Dale Hansen Classic was a talking point in Monday’s school board meeting where it was discussed that if the classic does not raise enough money to cover costs this year, the board may consider discontinuing it next year.

Frisco and Decatur high schools are the other two. Of the five outside teams invited to the classic, Azle is one of three teams that finished the 2014-2015 season with a winning record. And as if there isn’t enough anticipation to see coach Kitna at Waxahachie already, the classic will pit the Indians against Azle High School, the defending bi-district champions of District 5.Īzle went 11-1-1 last year and reached the postseason, a place that has eluded Waxahachie the past three years. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Waxahachie’s first home game follows a week-one rivalry matchup at Midlothian High School. “And we’re really hopeful that we can lapse some more sponsors based on the fact that we do expect it to be a bigger event this year.” “We anticipate that we’ll have more attendance this year because it is coach Kitna’s first home game,” Bridges said.

5-6, but suffered from bad weather and a transition in the Waxahachie communications department that was unable to organize the event last year, said Jenny Bridges, assistant director of public relations and Partners in Education.īridges isn’t anticipating the same issues this year and with former NFL Quarterback Jon Kitna coaching the Indians, she is expecting a significantly better turnout. The classic also awards 12 scholarships up to $1,000 to students. It was expected to return more than double that amount, after the district spent almost $56,000 on the tournament this past year. The classic, which began in 2012, featured six teams last year and brought in just north of $21,000. The Dale Hansen Classic might get unplugged if Waxahachie doesn’t raise enough money this year.
